We arrived back in Colorado last night about 11:15p. It was a long trip across the southern route along I-70. We left Thursday night from Chicago after the last workshop and made it to Columbia, MO by midnight. Caught a quick night's sleep with our friends Janet and Luke and then left in the morning.
Friday was a long day on the road. Stopped in KC for lunch at Arthur Bryant's BBQ and met an old seminary friend - that's right, Brian, I called you old. Sorry didn't get pictures but the beef and sausage combo makes my mouth water just to think about it.
Next stop was in Abilene, KS (boyhood home of Dwight D. Eisenhower) at the Russell Stover factory. Got some sweet samples and scoops of Blue Bell ice cream. Best of all, Alvin got to use his legs and run, run, run.
The rest of the time was pretty boring, except for Alli going the wrong way on I-70 for a couple miles - I think she wanted to go back to Chicago. We finished reading aloud "The Great Emergence: How Christianity is Changing and Why" by Phyllis Tickle. It was a thought provoking book giving great context to the changing landscape and direction of Christianity in our present time since the Great Reformation. It is worth the read for anyone who feels the changes in American Christianity over the past few decades.
So, anyway, we are back in Boulder. We need to drive to Denver today and get our home organized once again. Hopefully the hard woods are re-surfaced satisfactorily so we can put the water damage behind us and get on with life. Optimistically, we will write more about the Midwinter conference in days to come.
