We just spoke with the doctor who has been put on point. He is one of the 8 GI doctors in the hospital - of which 6 of them have looked over this case. That total does not include the four or five OB docs, at least two surgeons, a couple internal medicine doctors, another two or three surgeons, and a few radiologists. To sum it all up, they do not have a specific diagnoses for the cause of the abdominal pain. There are a variety of opinions out there but nothing that can be substantiated. The doctors are focusing on this small growth that has shown up in the mri and ct scan. They do not think it is cancer, especially since Allison has shown related symptoms for more than a decade and also because it appears to be smaller than it was a year ago. However, they are not sure what it is.
What they want to do, eventually, is open her up and do an exploratory surgery to locate this thing and remove it. However, because of the pregnancy they want to wait. So the plan is to get her off of the IV drugs and onto something oral to control the pain. Once she is off the IV, taking pain meds orally, and able to eat regular meals then she can go home. Obviously this may take a couple days or more. Anyway, it feels good to have a plan and know that they aren't going to do surgery right now. It is also good to know that they are going to follow up after the delivery and schedule to take care of this.
