Beginning Wednesday our schedule will be taken over by the public school calendar. Knowing this, we decided to get away for one last family summer adventure. This was our first real attempt at camping as a family - we don't believe KOA on road trips count. We drove east on Hwy 4 about an hour in the Stanislaus National Forest where we found a campsite at Mosquito Lake. The kids were pretty amped up and it was challenging to contain their energy but we survived and had a good time. Built a campfire last night to keep warm, and, more importantly, to eat s'mores. The kids were just fine with eating the marshmallows right off the sticks.
This morning, after eating and breaking down the camp we went for a hike. A trailhead labeled Heiser Lake was right across the street. We didn't plan on being gone very long given our past experience trying to get the kids to hike. However, to our surprise, we went about two miles before turning back. In all we were gone nearly 2 hours. Wish we would have packed a lunch and water so we could have made it to the lake. Regardless it was a good hike. Alvin led the way the entire time. Saw lots of alpine wildflowers and grasses. The trail was mostly forested with moderate elevation gains.
